Most small air fryers (2–5 qt) mean cooking in rounds for a family of four. At around 6 quarts, a single basket fits a meal’s worth of fries or wings; a dual-basket model lets you cook a main and a side at different settings. We compared models on capacity, basket layout, power, temperature range and footprint, using manufacturer specifications. Picks are based on specs plus aggregated owner reviews.

The picks in detail

Best overall single basket

Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Qt (CAF-DC601-KUS)

The Cosori TurboBlaze 6-Qt has the most flexible spec sheet of the single-basket models here: a 6-qt basket, a 90–450°F range (low enough for proofing and dehydrating), 9 cooking functions and 5 fan speeds. It’s rated at 1,725W and measures 11.8 × 11.8 × 11.9 in, so its square shape takes less depth than many 6-qt baskets.

For a family of four, 6 qt handles a side of fries or a batch of wings in one go. Larger mains, like a whole chicken, may need checking against the basket size.

Pros

  • 6-qt basket in a compact, square footprint
  • Widest temperature range here (90–450°F)
  • 5 fan speeds and 9 functions
  • Owner reviews often praise even crisping

Cons

  • One basket: main and side cook in turns
  • 11.9 in tall; check cabinet clearance
  • More settings than some families need
Best for mains and sides

Ninja Foodi DualZone DZ201 (DZ201)

The Ninja Foodi DualZone DZ201 splits 8 qt into two independent 4-qt baskets. You can run each at its own temperature and time, and Smart Finish staggers the start so both finish together; Match Cook copies settings across both baskets. It’s rated at 1,690W and 105–450°F with 6 functions.

That makes it the easiest way to do chicken and vegetables, or fries and nuggets, at the same time. The trade-off is size: at 17.86 lb it’s the bulkiest dedicated air fryer here, and each basket is narrower than a single 6-qt basket.

Pros

  • Cooks two foods at different settings
  • Smart Finish times both baskets to finish together
  • 8 qt total capacity
  • Reaches 450°F

Cons

  • Each basket is only 4 qt, so large items won’t fit
  • Wide and heavy (17.86 lb)
  • Two baskets to clean
Best for watching food cook

Instant Vortex Plus 6-Qt ClearCook (AFB6112SS)

The Instant Vortex Plus 6-Qt with ClearCook and OdorErase has a window in the basket drawer, so you can check browning without pulling the basket, and built-in filters that Instant says reduce cooking odors. It’s rated at 1,700W with a 95–400°F range and six functions: air fry, roast, broil, bake, reheat and dehydrate.

The stainless model (AFB6112SS) measures 15.43 in deep, 11.81 in wide and 12.99 in tall and weighs 13.11 lb.

Pros

  • ClearCook window to check food without opening
  • OdorErase filters for cooking smells
  • 6-qt basket
  • Six simple functions

Cons

  • Tops out at 400°F
  • Deepest single-basket footprint here (15.43 in)
  • Tallest single basket here (12.99 in)
Best if you also want a pressure cooker

Ninja Foodi OL501 (OL501)

If you’re also shopping for a pressure cooker, the Ninja Foodi OL501 air fries in its 6.5-qt pot using a 4.6-qt Cook & Crisp plate, which Ninja rates for 3 lb of fries. Its SmartLid switches between pressure cooking, steam-crisp and air frying, so you can pressure cook a chicken and crisp the skin in one pot.

It’s heavier and bulkier than any dedicated air fryer here (24.03 lb). Our Instant Pot vs Ninja Foodi comparison covers it in detail.

Pros

  • Air fryer and pressure cooker in one
  • Steam & Crisp modes for one-pot family meals
  • 14 functions
  • Ninja rates it for 3 lb of fries

Cons

  • Very heavy (24 lb) and large
  • Smaller crisping area than the pot size suggests
  • More complex than a basket air fryer

The Ninja Air Fryer Pro AF141 (5 qt) and Cosori Pro LE (5 qt) are better suited to one to three people; see our Cosori vs Ninja comparison. Air fryer toaster ovens fit more food in a flat layer but take up more counter space.

Who should buy what

You cook one main dish, often frozen or crispy foods

A 6-qt single basket like the Cosori TurboBlaze is the simplest, most compact choice.

You usually cook a main and a side together

Get the Ninja DZ201. Two baskets with Smart Finish is the biggest time-saver for family dinners.

You worry about smells or overcooking

The Instant Vortex Plus ClearCook adds a viewing window and odor filters.

You want one appliance for pressure cooking and air frying

The Ninja Foodi OL501 does both, if you have room for it.

What size air fryer does a family of 4 need?

As a rule of thumb, plan on about 6 quarts or more for four people, or two baskets totaling around 8 quarts. Capacity in quarts is measured differently by each brand, and the usable cooking area matters more than volume: food crisps best in a single layer. A wide, square basket fits more fries or wings in one layer than a deep, narrow one of the same rated size.

Check your counter and cabinets

Air fryers vent hot air from the back or top, so manufacturers ask for clearance around them. Measure the height under your wall cabinets: the models here range from 11.9 in to 13.07 in tall, and you need room above that for venting.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5-quart air fryer big enough for 4 people?

It can work for side dishes, but you’ll often cook in two rounds. A 6-qt basket or a dual-basket 8-qt model is more comfortable for four.

Single basket or dual basket for a family?

Dual baskets let you cook two foods at different settings and finish them together. A single large basket fits bigger items, like a whole chicken or a large batch of wings.

Which air fryer uses the least electricity?

The dedicated air fryers here are rated between 1,690W and 1,725W, so the difference is small. Cooking time matters more than rated power.

Can I cook a whole chicken in a 6-quart air fryer?

Often a small chicken fits, but check the maker’s basket dimensions and recipes. The Ninja Foodi OL501’s 6.5-qt pot is designed for larger pieces.

Did you test these air fryers?

No. These picks are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner reviews. See how we research.
