The Breville Barista Express has been a default first “grind-and-brew” espresso machine for years. The Ninja Luxe Café Premier Series (ES601) is the newer challenger: it also grinds and pulls espresso, but adds a built-in scale, guided extraction, hands-free milk frothing and drip and cold-brew modes. They suit different people, so here is what each maker says the machines do.
Short answer
Choose the Breville Barista Express if you want to learn espresso hands-on: you control dose, tamp and milk texture with a manual steam wand, a pressure gauge and PID temperature control. Choose the Ninja Luxe Café if you want café drinks with less technique: it weighs your grounds, guides extraction with Barista Assist, froths milk hands-free, and also makes drip coffee and cold brew. The Ninja has more grind settings (25 vs 16) and a slightly bigger reservoir (70 vs 67 oz), but it is heavier (25.7 vs 22.1 lb).

Who should buy which
If you enjoy the process and want to get better at espresso, the Breville Barista Express rewards practice and gives you the tools to diagnose a bad shot. If you want consistent lattes in a busy household, and someone else in the house drinks drip coffee, the Ninja Luxe Café does more of the work for you and covers more drink types. Owner reviews for the Breville often mention a learning curve; owner reviews for the Ninja often highlight ease of use.
* A UK retailer lists the Luxe Café at 19 bar. Ninja’s US product pages and owner’s guide that we checked do not state a pump pressure, so we don’t list one.

Which is easier for a beginner?
The Ninja is designed to remove the hardest steps. Its scale weighs your dose, Barista Assist recommends grind changes, and the Dual Froth System textures milk without technique. The Breville expects you to learn grind size, dose and tamping, and to steam milk by hand. Its pressure gauge and pre-infusion make that easier to learn, but it is still a manual process.
Counter space
The Breville is 15.9 in deep, 13.1 in wide and 12.4 in tall; the Ninja is 12.99 × 13.39 × 14.57 in. Check that the bean hopper clears your wall cabinets, and leave room to refill the tank, which on both machines is at the back.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Ninja Luxe Café a real espresso machine?
Yes. It grinds beans and pulls espresso with a portafilter, and adds drip and cold-brew modes. Ninja’s US pages focus on its grinder, scale and Barista Assist rather than pump pressure.
Can the Breville Barista Express make drip coffee?
No. It makes espresso and has a hot-water outlet you can use for Americanos.
Which has the better grinder?
Both use integrated conical burr grinders. The Ninja offers 25 settings, the Breville 16. More settings give finer adjustment, but the burr quality isn’t something maker specs can tell us.
Do I need a separate milk frother?
No. The Breville has a manual steam wand and the Ninja has a hands-free frothing system.
Did you test these machines?
No. This comparison uses Breville and Ninja product pages and manuals, plus aggregated owner reviews. See how we research.
